About
Dr. MGR had a dream close to his heart. To found an institution for the speech and hearing impaired at his residence in MGR Gardens.
The dream became a reality on 17th January 1990, when this institution was formally inaugurated at a well attended function. MGR’s cherished vision took a concrete shape as eminent persons like Smt.Janaki Ramachandran (late), Mr.N.P.V.Ramasamy Udayar (late), Dr.N.C.Ragavachari, Dr.Nagarajan and Dr.(Ms)Patrick Leelavathi (from The Clarke School ) and many well wishers from the field of education and rehabilitation of the speech and hearing impaired lent their shoulder to the effort.
His Vision, Now a thriving mission
This home recognised by the Commissioner of rehabilitation of the differently abled of the Government of Tamil Nadu has specially trained staff to handle the classes upto the higher secondary level with facilities for Science & Vocational (like computer & type writing) groups.
Apart from general education, the team of skilled and dedicated teachers guide the children to acquire language and speech skills as well as gymnastics, dance and yoga and help in nurturing their all round personality as to cope up with the challenging world.
Unity in Diversity
This home is secular in nature.The prayer during the everyday assembly is common to all religions. Apart from celebrating days of national importance such as Independence Day, Republic day, Children’s day etc, the Home also collectively participate in observing the important festivals of all religions and faiths to inculcate a sense of Unity in Diversity.
Culture
The students participate and excel in cultural , sports and other activities held at school and inter school levels.Be it drawing , music , kolam or even martial arts such as Silambuattam and Karate , the students leave their mark of excellence during public events.
Amplification Devices
As the children are taught in oral methods, Amplification devices such as Group hearing devices, Induction loop system, FM Group hearing System , Speech trainers are appropriately employed.
This home admits students irrespective of caste, creed or colour. No fee of any kind is collected from the students.
Vocational Training Center Vocational Training is given to the children in a variety of vocations by giving them job oriented practical training.
Advisory Center for Higher Education
Children are encouraged to integrate into society by helping them with admissions in normal schools and colleges. Children pursuing graduation and post-graduation in regular and open and distant learning modes from various institutions are given free boarding and lodging facilities. The home also bring in subject experts with collegiate experience to teach them and help them to appear for their Examinations.
Training & Placement Center
Children who have completed their education are trained according to the needs of the industry and are placed in organizations. Those industries are sensitized to the needs of the special children.
Creating Special Educators
India especially Tamil Nadu faces a shortage of trained Special Educators. Our institution has embarked on a mission to motivate and train graduates to become Special Educators.
Born as a vision in Dr.MGR’s mind, this institution is growing by leaps and bounds , lending a ear to the needs of the Speech and Hearing Impaired.
